Ola Ka Noʻeau: Excellence in Hawaiian artistry

This exhibition explores the genealogy of Hawaiian artistry focusing on the generational transmission of their art featuring artwork in kapa (barkcloth), decorated gourds, featherwork, plaiting, tool-making and visual design.

Origins of Today’s “Mixed Polynesian” Tattooing -
What was it really like in older times
B. Kaʻimiloa Chrisman, M.D., will present a fascinating seminar on the designs of Hawaiian & Polynesian tattoo, origins of the designs and how and why they were applied in the art. Hawaiʻi will be emphasized.
During his 31 years in Hawaiʻi, Kaʻimiloa was on all the islands and had an excellent relationship within the Hawaiian community. He has taught extensively and is a recognized scholar on many Hawaiian & Polynesian cultural topics.
In this Phoenix seminar, you will learn:
What’s true and what’s not about Polynesian tattoo
The different kinds of tools used to tattoo
How tools and inks were made
How techniques & designs differed in the island groups
Cultural rules and requirements to give and receive tattoos
How & why Kaʻimiloa has a self-applied traditional tattoo
Note: This will be a very thorough 90-minute PowerPoint presentation plus some traditional tattoo tools & materials to view, with time for questions at the conclusion.
