Ola Ka Noʻeau: Excellence in Hawaiian artistry

March 11 - October 28, 2023

This exhibition explores the genealogy of Hawaiian artistry focusing on the generational transmission of their art featuring artwork in kapa (barkcloth), decorated gourds, featherwork, plaiting, tool-making and visual design.

PRESENTATION for University of Hawaiʻi, Hilo Archaelogy Club - Wednesday, April 12, 2023

In this presentation, using PowerPoint, oral presentation and artifacts, Dr. Chrisman will teach in depth how old-time stone-on-stone hand work created many items such as mortars, bowls, sling and bowling stones, pestles, pounders, fishing items, anchors and images. There was no one to teach him when he began self-learning this work in the 1970s. He has become considerably skilled since then.

Origins of Today’s “Mixed Polynesian” Tattooing -

What was it really like in older times

B. Kaʻimiloa Chrisman, M.D., will present a fascinating seminar on the designs of Hawaiian & Polynesian tattoo, origins of the designs and how and why they were applied in the art. Hawaiʻi will be emphasized.

During his 31 years in Hawaiʻi, Kaʻimiloa was on all the islands and had an excellent relationship within the Hawaiian community. He has taught extensively and is a recognized scholar on many Hawaiian & Polynesian cultural topics.

In this Phoenix seminar, you will learn:

  • What’s true and what’s not about Polynesian tattoo

  • The different kinds of tools used to tattoo

  • How tools and inks were made

  • How techniques & designs differed in the island groups

  • Cultural rules and requirements to give and receive tattoos

  • How & why Kaʻimiloa has a self-applied traditional tattoo

Note: This will be a very thorough 90-minute PowerPoint presentation plus some traditional tattoo tools & materials to view, with time for questions at the conclusion.
